Review: AlphaSmart NEO Word Processor

Freelance writers are typically paid by the article, not by the hour, so idle web-surfing does nothing but lower my paycheck. Distraction salvation. Fantastically straightforward. PC data transfer is a breeze with USB or IR beaming. Rolling auto-save prevents data loss. Stated battery life is a spectacular 700 hours. Thin bodied, sturdy casing is an ergonomic success. Light and portable.

Despite its qualities, $250 seems pricey. It's hard not to miss full-page layouts. The 8-document file limit is stingy. Novelists and self-respecting geeks might be put off by the laughable 512kb of data storage. No backlight. No text formatting.

Freelance writers are typically paid by the article, not by the hour, so idle web-surfing does nothing but lower my paycheck. Meet the NEO: a bare bones word processor for the perennially distractible. What a boon-no browser, no chat, no Gmail, no fantasy baseball - nothing but text. The small, 5.75 x 1.5 inch LCD displays up to 6 lines of characters in... monochrome. No color!? Get over it folks, this is a tool, not a toy. That said, the NEO couldn't be simpler. The most useful commands are right there on the full-sized, satisfyingly clicky keyboard, and typical control-key-combos activate most other basic WP functions. Verdict? I'm sold. Since starting this review, I haven't checked my fantasy stats. Not even once.
