The estimated cost of piracy to the Indian film and entertainment business is a whopping $4 billion, according to an Ernst & Young and US-India Business Council study. The total cost to the film industry alone is roughly $1 billion, according to the report.
"With the financial crisis looming over
India, piracy will continue to affect the industry in terms of financial losses and of course, loss of jobs,'' Rajiv P Dalal, director of Motion Picture
Association International, told the Times of India.
There are other theories, though, that piracy isn't the sole reason for losses in the movie industry. Some argue that the business has been hurt by a sharp rise in ticket prices, which has made movies less affordable for most Indians.
