A few weeks ago, I wrote about iMinds, 8-minute topical audio books designed to fill the mundane moments in our lives with learning instead of boredom. Launched yesterday, iMinds has a new product designed for kids, called iMindsJNR.

While the concept is roughly the same with the 'Junior' line of iMinds products, the execution is slightly different. Targeted at 7 to 14 year olds, these audio books are somewhat shorter, coming in at around 5 to 6 minutes. The pacing of the audio is also a tad slower, allowing kids to hear and comprehend the information. Lastly, the music accompaniment is also more purposeful than what I found in the original 72 iMinds tracks; a trend I hope the producers continue in across the entire line as it helps engage the listener more.

It's hard to say whether these new entries into the iMinds line up will be as effective for kids as their traditional product is for adults. I'd venture that it depends on the person. Shorter in this case is working in their favor and the topics are more targeted at this particular age group, with titles including Civil Rights, Money, Volcanos and the Human Body.

But I'm not sure kids will use the audiobooks the same way as adults do. The purpose of iMinds was to help distract and educate us while waiting in line or going for a walk. With iMindsJNR, the concept is more education-focused. And that's OK. There are kids who have an appetite for learning as much as they can. And there are kids who need different approaches to learning.

While iMindsJNR might not be for everyone, if you're child is one who is generally interested in learning outside the classroom, this new offering is a great way to introduce them to new topics and keep them interested in the things they might not know so much about.

iMindsJNR audiobooks can be purchased at iminds.com, iTunes and Audible.com.
