6 Things My Daughter Learned from Super Bowl 47

My daughter is six. She hasn’t watched a fraction of the football I had by her age. I was raised in an era where Neil Lomax and Steve Largent were my secret crushes. The game has changed (and sex sells more than ever) but it is still apparently a learning experience for my daughter -- even if I don’t want her exposed to some of the issues she is asking about.

1. The Jeep: USO commercial: Now that she’s reading, she reads everything. She wanted to know what USO stands for at the end of the Jeep:USO commercial. We found out it stands for United Service Organizations. As an added bonus we were able to find a video of Patty Andrews, who recently passed away, and was a member of the Andrews Sisters World War II USO entertainment group.

2. Adults are afraid of the dark: The lights went out at the start of the second half. We decided that the players wouldn't play in the dark either because they were scared or because they wanted to be safe.

3. Iron Man is awesome: We haven’t shown her the Iron Man movies yet. I have a feeling we aren't going to be able to hold off for much longer. Maybe he could have helped with the lights going out...

4. Wearing your underwear in public: Beyoncé and her girls wearing their outfits made my girl wonder if she could wear her swimsuit to school.

5. Pole dancing: "Mom, why is that lady dancing around a pole?"

6. Both teams are American?: Welcome to a house where one of the current passions is national landmarks. We reminded her that her aunt and uncle live in San Francisco and showed her where Baltimore is on a map. Then came the explanation that everywhere else in the world football means soccer (her mind was blown).

Thank you Google for letting me look up answers and maps on the fly, and not crashing like Twitter did for most of the evening. I am not sure who learned more this evening: me, or my daughter.
