Review: Salsa Cycles Beargrease Carbon SLX

A fun way to bust those winter blues is by hopping on a fat bike—a type of bicycle designed for snowy trails.

The Beargrease isn’t designed for every winter condition. It’s a thoroughbred born to ride fast on packed powder. Salsa’s Mukluk Carbon XT ($3,699) is for riding rugged winter backcountry, and its Blackborow GX Eagle ($3,299) is for long-haul expeditions or winter commuting.

The Sami, the legendary reindeer herders who live in the northernmost regions of Russia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, have 180 words for snow and ice. That could also be said for cyclists who ride through the winter months in any northern climate. Because of seasonal changes in light, temperature, and precipitation, compounded by the increasing irregularities of climate change, it is almost guaranteed that no two days of cycling in the winter will be the same. That’s where a fat bike can save a cyclist’s soul.

Some may think that riding a bike in the winter sounds like the worst possible kind of teeth-shattering hell. It’s true that to have a fun, safe ride there’s strategizing involved: What kind of layering works for single-digit temps? Studded or non-studded tires? Do my lights work? Will I kill myself riding on icy roads or sidewalks to get to the trailhead? More than summer riding, it’s essential to dial a ride in ahead of time because the consequences of a mechanical failure, like hypothermia or frostbite, are high.

But there’s also something profoundly meditative about riding in the winter, floating across a silent, monochromatic landscape. It’s a time to throw out the incessant Strava goals and instead enjoy the fleeting magic of winter. Ride on into the night, which arrives at about 4:45 pm where I live, and the survival-of-the-fittest Jack London vibe is exponentially amplified.

In the long trajectory of cycling history, fat bikes are relatively new: In 1980 a Frenchman named Jean Naude had the smart idea to run low-pressure Michelin tires to pedal more than 800 miles across the Sahara desert. In 1986 he added a third wheel and pedaled almost 2,000 miles from Algiers to Timbuktu. At the same time, cyclists in Alaska were welding rims together to create a wider surface on which to ride the Iditabike, the 200-mile suffer fest that follows snowmobiles and dog mushing routes. Meanwhile, a guy in New Mexico named Ray Molina was building 82-mm rims with 3.5-inch tires to ride dunes and arroyos. The tinkering went mainstream in 2005 when Minnesota bike manufacturer Surly created the Pugsley, with its 65-mm Large Marge Rim and 3.7-inch Endomorph tire, which made fat biking available to the masses.

Fat bikes used to be synonymous with “slow,” and that may have been true with the earliest behemoth steel frames. Pedaling them through bottomless white fluff was a grindingly brutal workout. But times have changed. Brands like Salsa, Fatback, Specialized, Trek, and Rocky Mountain continue to evolve with increasingly lighter builds, ever-widening tires to handle even more extreme conditions, and standardized components like dropper seat posts.

In January, Rad Power Bikes’ debuted its new e-powered Rad Rover, and in September, REI Co-Op Cycles came out with its first ever fat bike, a rigid aluminum frame with 26-inch wheels. Today’s highest-end fatties are lighter than many mountain bikes. A size medium 2021 Salsa Beargrease Carbon XO1 Eagle, with its carbon frame, rims, and bars, weighs in at 27 pounds.

Since the snow began to fly on October 15 in northern Minnesota, I’ve been riding the 2021 Salsa Beargrease Carbon SLX. It’s the same bike as the XO1 Eagle, minus a few carbon components and with a slightly lower-end drive train. Of Salsa’s three fat bike models (the Beargrease, Mukluk, and Blackborow), the Beargrease is designed for going fast, thanks to its progressive shape, its ability to handle multiple rim sizes and tire widths for different race conditions, and its plethora of attachment points to lash on extra gear, food, and parts for long-haul races like the notoriously challenging Arrowhead 135.

While the Arrowhead 135 is not in my proverbial wheelhouse anytime soon, the carbon Beargrease is still a responsive ride in everything from mixed-season mud and ice to packed-powder trails. The bike comes with 27.5-inch wheels and a 3.8-inch-wide tire on up to 80-mm rims, which optimizes its performance on packed, groomed trails. But it can also run a 26-inch wheel with up to 4.6-inch-wide tires on 100-mm rims for floating on more rugged snowy terrain. It will even convert to a 29-incher with a 2- to 3-inch tire on 50-mm rims for year-round touring. If you want to add front suspension to soften the bumps, the frame is compatible with a front fork with up to 100 mm of travel.

The first time I tested the Beargrease in northern Minnesota, the temperature was 34 degrees and the trail was a combination of mud and ice. As anyone who rides these conditions knows, the worst-ever feeling is when the bike slides out from under you on a patch of ice and your face has met the ground before you can register that you’ve broken your collarbone and need stitches. Luckily, that didn’t happen. The Beargrease felt stable, nimble, and secure, even without studded tires to stick to the icy sections. Its agility lies in its more aggressive geometry: a long front center (the horizontal distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the front axle), a short stem, wide bars, and a 440-mm chainstay, which make it feel more like a trail bike.

Despite subsequent days of riding in the cold, muddy stew of Minnesota shoulder season, the Beargrease’s Shimano 1x12 SLX drivetrain and Sram Guide T brakes held tough. And unlike my own steel fat bike, the Beargrease hasn’t torqued my knees, a common complaint with fat bikes because of their weight and wider Q Factor (the distance between the pedal attachment points on the crank arms, when measured parallel to the bottom bracket axle). Salsa intentionally narrowed the Q Factor of the cranks to limit knee stress, but the lightweight carbon frame helps too. At times on my rides, a dropper seat post would have come in handy, and while the bike is compatible with a 30.9-mm seat post, it isn’t part of the build.

For racing or longer touring, there’s no shortage of places to stash gear. On either side of the bike’s Kingpin fork, there are three-pack bosses for bottle cages or Salsa-brand “Anything Cages,” designed to carry any other lightweight gear you need. On the frame, there are two water bottle mounts inside the triangle, one accessory mount on the underside of the downtube, and top tube mounts that accommodate bike computers and a top-tube bag.

It's still autumn, which means the serious snow hasn’t started to fly. But the Beargrease is giving me good reason to long for winter and some nicely groomed corduroy.
