It's equal parts D.I.Y. and high-tech; electronic musician Robert DeLong shows us his awesome rig, which includes a mix of video game controllers, a cutlery tray from Ikea, two Mac minis, and more. See how it all comes together as he performs “Don’t Wait Up” from his new album "In the Cards," out Friday, September 18 on Glassnote Records.

Released on 09/18/2015

Yo, what's up?

I'm Robert Delong.

I'm a live electronic music performer,

and I'm going to show you how my rig is put together.

Here we go.

This is the Gibraltar Rack

which holds all my electronics.

Each piece is one fully labelled,

so I know exactly how it goes together.

It's like Legos, except more expensive.

Kind of when I realized I was maybe nerdier than the rest

was when I gotten into programming

at a pretty young age.

The QBasic, it's like a simple MSDOS programming language,

and I'd make text adventures

♫ Waiting on the phones to ring and wake us up again

♫ Lost inside a dream with halls that never seem to end

♫ Falling from the ceiling, I keep crawling on the floor

♫ Can't avoid the feeling this has happened all before

♫ I stumble out of my home

This right here,

is a beautifully made a keyboard mouse combo with usb hubs.

This is how I control my computers.

This is actually made out of a cutlery container.

♫ So don’t you wait up for me, I'm leaving with the light

♫ Don’t wait up for me, I've got a restless mind

♫ Trying to pull ahead,

This right here it's a little road worn

but this is a custom piece made by livid.

As you can see knob, sliders,

and some big arcade buttons and stuff.

This is just a midi controller

that no one else in the world has one like this.

Which is for better or for worse I have it.

This right here is a flight simulator joystick.

One of the game controllers

that I've repurposed and hacked

so it can be a midi controller to control music.

These are all just stock controllers

that are usb or bluetooth.

Can turn whatever signals that are coming into your computer

into something totally different.

It's like some really basic scripting.

♫ I'm looking out every now and then

♫ If I'm leaving my home

♫ I don't know when I'll be back again

♫ So don’t you wait up for me, I'm leaving with the light

This guy right here, my favorite piece of equipment

is called a midi fighter.

It's got some arcade buttons on it which is cool.

The coolest thing about it to me

is that it's got a gyro in it

so you can move things around

and kind of assign how that changes the sound.

The last thing I have is my wheel.

Probably a 15 year old piece of racing hardware.

These are the brains of the operation.

This is a Presonus mixing console

which actually acts as my converters for the computer.

It's two mac minis right there

and that's what connects to all this stuff

to make the magic happen.

♫ I've got a restless mind

♫ So don't you wait up for me, I'm leaving with the light

♫ Don’t wait up for me, I've got a restless mind

These right here are my microphoness or vocals.

One of them is my main vocal mic.

The other one I have it on effects.

My main microphones runs through an analog preamp,

a Neve 1073.

If anybody's an audio nerd

they would know that all your favorite albums

have been recorded through a 1073.

Everybody from Nirvana to Tom Petty to me.

♫ I've got a restless mind

I'm Robert Delong.

I just played my tune Don't Wait Up here for Wired.

Hope you like it.

Starring: Robert DeLong
