How to Make Monster Sounds with the Click of a Button

Wonder how Bodock the Giant Creature and his alien sidekick got their voices? In this episode, we take a trip to Anarchy Post to see how the creature's voice came to life with the help of voice actors and Dehumaniser—a real-time vocal processor for monster sound FX.

    Cockpit, opening and closing.

    (screeching noise)

    (deep growling)

(Matt) Whenever that thing opens, it should make kind of a

    goofy, like...

    (squeaky cartoon noise)

Like, it's all really cool whenever he shows up,

    there's kind of that sound

    Voice, that's over the top?

Yeah, that lets you know it's...it's kinda funny.

But he's a little, he's a little chagrined by it,

    because it's obviously (cartoon sounds)

    Yeah.

    Greetings!

    Greetings!

(Ben) When are we going to fix this? Gah!

(Matt) It's the rare Covarrubias in his

    natural habitat.

Oh, hi. We are in charge of creating all of the

sound design elements for the creature.

The little guy is Ambassador Zlog from

    planetoid system whatever.

They are on a diplomatic mission.

And he's, you know, a kind of bodyguard, right-hand man,

but he's really there for the swag and cool t-shirts.

(Tom) The implementation of it being inside

something that is an interactive experience for people.

It's way different from a movie.

The sounds have to work on their own without

really any input from us after they're done.

    (high-tech special effect sounds)

(Ben) Great. It's got great low end, it's not going to

    be distracting, which is nice.

But, it's there, it's really cool.

    (special effect sounds)

Can we get more bass out of that?

    (deep growling)

Dehumanizer is a real-time voice effector, that

does pitch-shifting, granular synthesis, pretty much

anything you could do to a voice to make some kind

of creature sound or otherworldly vocal effect.

    (multiple special effect voices)

Tom has always been very adamant about getting actors

to come in, and have their performance become part

    of the creature.

    (creature noises)

Even if it's just (grunts), efforts and things

like that, and then manipulating them and then it

just pinks everything to a whole different level.

    Three and four...three

    (creature voices)

(Creature voice) Here's a membrane for speech,

however the feedback is making me talk slower.

I also feel like I'm having a stroke.

It seems like every time you're working with

these voices, if you have two going back and forth,

you're creating new bits, and new things, and that's

truly what's going to carry it is going to

    be the performance.

You don't want the effects to get in the way.

(Creature voice) Here's the deal. I push him out

of the way, you apologize. We'll get into that

    convention center quickly that way.

    (Shrill creature babble)

    (Creatures all speaking at once)

I can't wait to see how kids react to it.

    Oh my god!

Adults are going to love it just for the spectacle.

    Yeah.

But it's different seeing a kid actually believe

    what they're seeing is real.

Kids, it's like, instantly they are asking questions,

they're involved with this thing that you've created

    out of pure imagination.

    (High pitched alien voice)

    Okay, was that it?

    (Alien giggling)

    That was the one?

So, we have our two select for deep and high.

It's very lightly over for deep.

    Yeah, it's fun.
